Panama. All pay-TV companies in Latin America have strategies to fight signal piracy. But in addition to having to face the evolution of pirates, they also have to face the technical ignorance about the subject that judges have, with which criminal proceedings often do not advance.
Sergio Piris, head of legal affairs, clandestinity and crimes in technologies of Cablevisión of Argentina, indicated that the main problem when facing piracy is that ordinary people and the government itself do not understand the dimension of the consequences of this crime.
The issue goes beyond simply signal theft and unfair competition. It also affects the service generating discomfort of the clients and economic losses for the industry and the state. But the most serious thing is that they have identified that piracy has become an issue of organized crime.
Sergio Piris' office is charged with investigating these crimes and supporting legal processes. "When we identify a criminal action, we investigate, collect evidence and write the lawsuit with detailed explanations, in order to help the judges understand why the crime of computer fraud is confirmed," he said.
In addition, the company is working on educating the public. With strong support from Certal, they carry out constant training in the sector, in schools and the judicial apparatus, although not in all cases there is interest in the subject.
