International channels strengthen Latin TV production

Panama. Producing four series per year in each of the Latin American countries where they have a strong presence and a constant search for original ideas in the region, are some of the goals that the companies Fox, Discovery and Turner have set to maintain and grow their audience and regional work.

During the producers' forum held within the framework of the Tepal 25 congress, which takes place at the Sheraton hotel in Panama, the representatives of these three companies highlighted the importance that Latin America has acquired in the development of their businesses, not only because of the audience they have, but also because of the increase in local production with local ideas.

Discovery's Allan Navarrete said part of the network's success in the region is that viewers like to see themselves reflected on screen and have sought to please them since 1996, when they began making local productions.

"We have had a lot of success in audience with programs like the special about Gabriel García Márquez, a year after his death. Although he was a very important person for Colombia, the country where he was born, and Mexico, the country where he lived part of his years and died, the whole region knew him. And so we seek to have programs with presenters and actors from different countries in the region, although it is not an easy task," navarrete said.

For his part, Mariano Berterreix of Fox, stressed that the Latin production of the channel is based on original projects, which have not been seen elsewhere. But he emphasizes that structuring programs that serve the entire region is a difficult task and gave as an example the humor or comedy programs, with which sometimes they are not understood from one country to another.

And among Turner's plans for Latin America, according to Angel Zambrano, senior VP of Content for Latin America of the company, they plan to produce four series a year in each of their most important markets in the region, with productions that seek to offer "everywhere" services.

Undoubtedly, this is a positive outlook for the Latin American broadcast industry in the coming years.
