History, constant search for unexpected people and topics

Colombia. For a channel like History Channel, which has a presence throughout Latin America, creating content for the region that they like in all their countries is an almost impossible mission due to the variety of cultures and idiosyncrasies. But that is the task of the regional producers of the channel, which for five years has been defined as "entertainment based on real events" or factual entertainment.

Daniel Laje, from The History Channel, commented during his presentation at the Bogotá Audiovisual Market, that they are constantly receiving proposals from producers with ideas for programs for the channel. Therefore, he gave some tips to succeed with his proposals.

  • Ideas that have a great impact, with unexpected characters and themes.
  • First find the character and then the theme. Sometimes very good ideas are generated with characters that are impossible to find.
  • Not making copies of successful programs in the United States, there they worked well because they are the reflection of their culture.
  • Know the channel to which the proposal is presented, which is a complement to the programming.
  • Topics that do not have expiration dates.
  • Be honest with the producers, do not lie about the scope and possibilities of the proposal or the capacities of the producers.

Finally, Daniel Laje pointed out that "all the topics are interesting if they are properly told. The biographical series with dramatic cores represented, which narrate personal and interpersonal motivations of the characters, are a successful example of what we are doing."
