ANTV presents sector report in 2013

Colombia. As established by the Law that created the National Television Authority, the regulatory body on the television sector in Colombia during the past year, in which you can find a complete panorama of how the industry is integrated in the country, as well as investments in one of the segments.


The report highlights that the national household survey conducted by the Dane, showed that in 2013 in the 13.4 million households surveyed, 91% have a television for a total of 14.3 million televisions, of which 22% is plasma, LCD or LED.

Regarding open public television, the report indicates that in Colombia there are nine operators of public open television, eight regional and one national that operates three channels (Señal Colombia, Señal Institucional and Canal Uno). The national channels according to rtvc indicators, had as of December 31, 2013, a coverage of 92% of the country's population, according to the information provided by that operator.

In 2013, resources of $156,217 million were allocated, 96.3% of the budgeted resources . Of this amount, resources of $149,928 million were executed by the public operators of the television service.

For its part, private free-to-air television in Colombia today has two operators: RCN and Caracol. These concessionaires have the contractual obligation to cover municipalities greater than 20,000 inhabitants and capital cities, guaranteeing a population coverage of 86% and according to the reports of these operators this obligation at the cut-off date was fulfilled.

Regarding the financing of this service, commercial open television is financed mainly with advertising pattern, which amounts to sums exceeding $ 1.2 billion, the next income is the sale of productions internationally which provide revenues of more than $ 42 billion and finally there are television services which participate with a figure above the $2 billion.

Within closed television there are two types of operators namely: i) Subscription television, cable (63 operators) and satellite (2 operators), which is for profit and ii) Community television (757 organized communities), non-profit. In Colombia as of December 2013, 4.67 million subscribers were reported to ANTV by the different operators with gross revenues of $158 billion.

The number of community television associates exceeds 200,000 and they generate a gross income of more than four billion a year in 757 associations. As for the distribution of these operators throughout the national territory, we find that the highest concentration is presented in Cundinamarca (150) and Antioquia (113), followed by Santander (66), Boyacá (53), Tolima (32), graphically this can be evidenced in Illustration No. 37.
