Mexico. The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco), issued a public communication through which it recommended not to buy televisions that do not have the technology to receive the digital television signal that will begin operating in 2015.
The entity recommended that Mexicans that at the time they wish to change their televisions, take into account only those that clearly specify in their packaging that they have the new technology. In the same sense, he asked to denounce the cases in which the packaging of the television is removed the specification that it is analogous.
Among the recommendations that Profeco makes to buy a TV, is to check that in the technical specifications it says digital tuner, HDTV or SDTV, which are usually located in the box or the instruction.
He also explains that if the buyer knows the reference of the TV he wants to buy, he can check on the manufacturer's website if it includes the ATSC A/53 tuner, a model of digital television adopted in Mexico, or ask the seller if the television receives ATSC or ATSC/53 digital signal and "ask for a clear answer.
Another aspect in which this point can be verified is with the date of manufacture of the TV, because no device prior to 1998 receives a digital signal and will require a digital decoder.
Finally, he recalled that televisions that do not have digital technology will require a decoder to receive the signal of open television from 2015, a box that can have a cost that is between 650 to 1,200 Mexican pesos.
