Chile. While the congress continues to discuss the project of Development of regional technical competences for digital television of free reception, a process that takes several years and that has delayed the implementation of digital TV, the government of that country decided to start tests in seven regions.
Today three regions have digital television broadcasts and for the second half of this year it is expected that four more regions will join, but this process has not been able to develop faster due to the lack of approval of the law in Congress.
Chile's Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Jorge Atton, explained that the start of tests is due to the commitment to support regional and local channels in the adoption of new technologies.
This work is part of the project Development of regional technical skills, which facilitates regional channels and producers access to equipment and supports the training of professionals. In addition, they seek to meet the goal of having digital television freely received in 80% of the country by 2014.
Finally, the official pointed out that according to government estimates, three years after the law is approved in Congress, they should have 85% of today's analog television with digital television and it will take two more years to reach 100%.
