Venezuela. By the end of 2012, half of the Venezuelan population will have access to digital television, thanks to the installation of 13 transmitters that will give the open signal from the last quarter of this year.
The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Jorge Arreaza, said that "this year we will have an open signal in several cities of the country, the Federal Council of Argentina delivered the keys to the first shelters -structure where the transmitter, tower and receiver of the digital TV signal is placed- to guarantee access in 13 cities and in the coming years all Venezuelans will have access to digital TV", the official pointed out.
Arreaza made these assertions during the First Meeting of Communities of Free Technologies, held at the headquarters of the state-owned National Telephone Company of Venezuela (Cantv).
The meeting was attended by more than 200 representatives of Free Software and Hardware collectives, from all over the South American nation.
Likewise, the Deputy Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Postal Services and president of Cantv, Manuel Fernández, explained that in the last two years progress has been made in the deployment of the open signal for a large part of the population, the result of agreements between Venezuela and Argentina.
Digital television will allow greater offer, quality and interactivity from applications of each team.
