What will television look like in 2025?

Screens with extraordinary definition, virtual transmission systems and interactive content so segmented that they will almost be tailored to each one, are the perspectives that are already underway and that in 2025 will be daily for viewers of that moment.

By TecnoTelevisión&Radio

Since its first broadcasts in 1927, television has evolved from an elitist medium to a massive one, from operating on black and white images to transmitting in colours, from being analogous to digital and from showing high-quality images to reaching hyperreality.

This industry, which by the end of 2017 plans to generate sales of televisions worldwide in the order of 100,000 million US dollars and that today reaches 1,500 million homes around the planet, faces frantic changes on account of technological advances that almost do not allow to finish taking a step in its progress, when another one is already given.

Experts who will be the center of attention at the academic meeting of Tecno Televisión & Radio, one of the most important fairs of this industry in the world, which will be held in Bogotá from November 14 to 17, make an analysis of the 5 trends that will surely help us draw what this asset of modern humanity will be like in just 8 years.

1-    The 4K
Although they already inhabit many homes in the world, the screens equipped with 4K system, which begin to leave behind the Full HD and are equipped with a greater number of pixels (3,840 x 2,160, compared to 1,920 x 1,080), have not finished optimizing because not all content producers have managed to acquire the technology to capture, edit and broadcast in 4K. According to Alejandro Pasika, CEO of GAD Electronics, an American company that develops technology for television, "now, most of these producers are facing the dilemma of taking this leap, taking into account that 8K is already approaching by leaps and bounds, a fact that can completely change their technical and financial projections in the short and medium term.

2-    The 8K
To increase the speed of the technological cart of television, several commercial brands that had talked about experimental models, already announce the launch of their 8K screens, which are expected to be on the market at the beginning of 2018. These, which like those of 4K will grow in size with average measures of 70 inches, work with a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, that is, 16 times more pixels than a Full HD TV. These 8K TVs also push the development of sound with systems that will have to be accommodated to change the viewer experience.

3-    HDR
For its acronym in English of High Dynamic Range, or "high dynamic range", this is a technology in full development that will also define the future of television quality. This aims to process the images to cover the widest range of exposure levels in all areas of the screen to create greater realism, reproducing more accurate colors. HDR offers greater contrast between dark and bright colors, and overall has more colors than conventional TVs, virtually allowing it to show what the camera actually sees when recording or, almost, what the human eye would see.

HDR allows for great realism and in the case of nature-related images, it provides an appreciation of greener trees, bluer skies, and more defined-looking clouds because more colors are available and greater color contrast.

4-    THE HFR
The High Frame Rate, or high frame rate is a technology that will forever change the way you appreciate moving images such as action scenes or sporting events on television. It is a technology that increases the number of frames in a video image and goes from the traditional 24, 25 or 30 frames per second to about 100, or even 120. According to the GAD Electronics expert, who will be a speaker at the Tecno Television & Radio fair, the result will be an improvement in the capture and reproduction of fast or sudden movements, such as typical sports shots, providing a more real and uniform vision instead of the spasmodic movement or motion blur that is given by the speed of the object or the movement of the camera.

5-    IP TRANSMISSION
The process that today use television platforms on demand to "transport" their content is only a small sample of the great potential of this technology whose future aims to eliminate the use of cables to carry audio and video signals from one place to another in channels, studios and production companies. In the case of live transmissions, the great challenge is that of external wireless transmission, by "air", from the production centers from the moment of capturing the image to its destination at the users' homes. When this is achieved, the "lowering of the general costs" of a production will allow the creation of different contents and with them, real changes of culture for those who at that moment are sitting in front of a television.

The path is mapped out and, of course, the new trends are palpable. In terms of consumption, in Latin America, at least 1 in 10 people between the ages of 20 and 30 have unsubscribed from their cable services to invest their resources by adopting on-demand services. Consumers under the age of 20 are also canceling their contracts and 10% of these populations have never hired a cable company.

Likewise, experts say that technologies will lead us to new  consumption habits that in fact are already an abyss if we compare our parents watching television on the sofa of the house and today's young people who do not conceive of life without handling at will all kinds of content from their mobile devices.
