Yahoo! closes the purchase of Tumblr for 832 million euros

The CEO of Tumblr David Karp has confirmed on Thursday the closing of the acquisition of his social network by Yahoo! at the International Festival of Creativity in Cannes Lions in France. Tumblr will continue to maintain its identity and features as promised by Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer.

Yahoo!'s purchase of the microblogging network had previously been announced last May. However, it was not until this Thursday when the CEO of Tumblr David Karp confirmed the closing of the operation officially.

The closing of the acquisition, for a total of 1,100 million dollars (832 million euros), has taken place at the International Festival of Creativity in Cannes Lions in France, where Karp has also spoken of the differences of its social network with respect to other social networks.

Regarding the deal, Yahoo! has maintained the same premise as in previous statements; they will retain the independence and essence of Tumblr which, in any case, will remain under the responsibility of its founder David Karp. In the words of the American company: "the product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately by the Tumblr team."

Yahoo! hopes to monetize through advertising and other marketing services the surge of millions of monthly visitors it is expected to receive. To do this, the company said that "Tumblr will allow to integrate complementary content to the Yahoo! website and will create new opportunities for advertising."

Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer added that she was "thrilled to officially welcome David and his team" as she considers Tumblr an "incredible company."

Despite everything, no updates have been detected during this Thursday in the number of Tumblr users, which did happen at the time of the announcement of the deal last May. There were more than 300 monthly users and 5 billion posts with more than 75,000 new registrations every day.
