MADRID, 14 May. (Portaltic/EP) -
Amazon has confirmed the purchase of Liquavista, a well-known company of the giant Samsung to boost the development of new screens for mobile devices. At the moment the price of the operation has not been revealed.
The online retailer Amazon has managed to gain a foothold in the mobile device market thanks to its famous Kindle eReader and its subsequent family of KindleFire tablets. In its effort to continue offering users devices at an affordable price but with great features in both software and hardware, Amazon expands its portfolio of acquisitions with Liquavista.
Liquavista belonged to the giant Samsung but finally Amazon has managed to snatch it, according to The Digital Reader that has had access to the documentation of the Chamber of Commerce of the Netherlands. The company is focused on a technology called electrowetting, which provides more clarity to screens in all lighting conditions and can display videos with lower power consumption.
This technology can be used in mobile devices such as e-readers, smartphones, GPS devices, portable media players, cameras, and in the future for televisions.
At the moment the purchase price of Liquavista has not been revealed, however this year Samsung Electronics was asking for less than 100 million dollars for its business. Samsung bought the Netherlands-based company in early 2011.
With this acquisition, perhaps Amazon has in mind the possibility of manufacturing its own 'smartphone', in addition to continuing to improve its range of eReaders and 'tablets', to compete with the big players in the sector.
