Judge Koh asks Apple's lawyer if he smokes crack

La jueza Koh pregunta al abogado de Apple si fuma 'crack'

MADRID, 17 Aug. (Portaltic/EP) -

Amid the tense legal climate between Samsung and Apple, Judge Lucy Koh, responsible for the case in California, has become desperate and has asked Apple's lawyer if he smokes 'crack', in response to his initiative to lengthen the trial with his documents.

Last Thursday's session of the most talked about trial in San Jose, California, has given the floor to Apple's lawyer, William Lee, to refute the arguments of his rival. The defense of those of Cupertino has prepared a document of 70 pages in which it was intended to call 20 witnesses to testify, two hours before the end of the session.

"Unless he's smoking crack he knows these witnesses aren't going to call each other," the judge told the jury at the session. The judge's statement came after the lawyer presented a long rebuttal of the South Korean's statements, with a very tight time frame.

The forecast of the testimony of many witnesses is made with a minimum margin of four hours, explained the judge. For his part, Apple's lawyer has been unable to deny the allegations. "My Honor, first of all, I'm not smoking crack. I can promise you that," he said. However, he later admitted to cutting the document he wanted to present considerably. The call of the 22 witnesses meant lengthening the trial by at least two more hours.

As the discussion has continued, the judge has become even more frustrated and has told the parties that the conversation would come at the expense of their trial times. "I'm billing more time because they're being unreasonable," he said. The trial, which has been going on for several weeks, is scheduled to end the presentation of documents and statements this week.

But the investment in time and money in the trial by the two big tech companies is incomparable with how much the two play together. Therefore, Samsung and Apple continuously prolong the trial with new arguments in their favor.

However, Koh has given the two companies a limited time of 25 hours each to present their arguments.

Earlier in the week, the judge was already denying another attempt by Apple to wield more evidence in its favor. Apple wanted to call designer Susan Kare to testify. But she could not attend the trial before next Monday, so Koh dismissed her participation in the trial.

The legal battle has a very tight schedule and it is expected that from next week the jury will begin to examine the statements of both companies.
