Sony promotes live IP production system

Latin America. There are already 30 leading companies in the industry backing Sony's live IP production system. The new AV over IP interface offers low latency and noise-free switching of HD and 4K video, audio and metadata, as part of an IP-based network.

The live IP production system packages video, audio and metadata, enabling real-time transmission between video production products over standard network infrastructures. This technology will further enhance Sony's live IP production system, increasing effectiveness and reducing the costs of producing sporting events and live streaming from studios.

To enable the deployment of related products, Sony plans to initiate a licensing program to provide technical specifications. In addition, several development tools will be available: a Sony LSI module by the end of the year, Xilinx will release IP cores for FPGAs to support Sony's live IP production system by the end of 2015, and Altera is working closely with Sony to support and develop this IP.

The new live IP production system combines the latest IP network technologies with a current standard SDI interface to support any video transmission resolution. While conventional systems require multiple different cable types to carry different signals (video, audio, reference, metadata, and control data), the live IP production system only needs a standard network cable that traverses conventional network switches.

Sony combined a unique new technology with established standards to achieve reliable, scalable and stable streaming. This new solution supports the direct connection of multiple types of production devices to the IP network through an existing 3-layer IP switch infrastructure. In addition, it allows simultaneous transmission to multiple points and source switching without noise in real time, as it handles SD, HD and 4K video resolutions simultaneously.

The new live IP production system is designed to offer flexibility and scalability, and in the future, users will have the ability to migrate to a greater number of devices and higher video resolutions, including HD to 4K.

Contribution to interoperability

Sony is contributing to industry standardization activities by ensuring the interoperability of the video over IP interface.

In addition, Sony has developed a low-latency video codec (LLVC), which enables 4K transmission at 60p over 10 Gbps Ethernet, and plans to file a registered SMPTE declaration document (RDD) shortly, aiming for industry-wide interoperability.

To date, 30 leading companies have expressed support for Sony's live IP production system:
