International. Arri announced the new Alexa Mini, a tool designed for specialized shots that combines a compact and lightweight format and the same image quality of the Alexa system.
In order to maintain the elasticity of Arri construction in a new lightweight and small chamber, certain unique design solutions have been incorporated. They include highly integrated and environmentally sealed electronics, a lightweight carbon housing, and a solid titanium PL mount that connects directly to the sensor's new internal mount to ensure a super-stable focal length, even if large lenses are being used.
It can be operated in several ways: by wireless remote control, as a normal camera with the Arri MVF-1 multiple viewfinder attached, or with a built-in monitor controlled via the user interface button on the camera body itself. In addition, the interchangeable lens mount of the Alexa Mini can be replaced by any mount designed for Amira Arri cameras, allowing the use of lenses with B4 mount video and EF of still photography.
Equipped with a 4:3 sensor, automatic decompression mode for anamorphic productions and speeds of 0.75-200 fps, the Alexa Mini records uncompressed ProRes or Arriraw either on built-in CFast 2.0 cards or on a specially designed external Codex recorder that can record image stream from up to four ALEXA Mini cameras simultaneously.
The camera design has been optimized for use with state-of-the-art brushless gimbals, multicopters and other specialized rigs. Like the Amira camera, the Alexa Mini can record ProRes 4K images in ultra high definition, facilitating real-time 4K UHD output and simple processes for high-resolution digital media.
The Alexa Mini is scheduled to start shipping in May 2015.
