Cuba. One of the main problems that has not allowed the development of digital television in Cuba has been the high cost of implementing it. That is why, based on the Chinese model, the Lacetel Telecommunications Research and Development Institute is working on the issue.
According to statements by Rufino Cabrera, one of Lacetel's researchers, they are focused on two fronts. The first has to do with intellectual property on the Chinese model, for which they are looking to create modules that allow reducing imports.
The second point is through the company Radio-Cuba that is in the process of developing and designing interfaces, also under the Chinese model, thus continuing the reduction of costs for the implementation of DTT on the Island. And researchers are still looking for what other equipment and systems they can manufacture at home to adopt digital television as soon as possible.
The goal that the Cuban government has set itself is that in a period of no more than five years the inhabitants of the Island can enjoy digital television. According to the schedule presented, it is expected that by 2016 they will have their own decoders, as well as other required circuits.
This is a work that is carried out hand in hand with the Chinese government, with which Cuba signed a contract for the adoption of its system in 2011, being the only one in Latin America to base its contents on this technology.
