Mexico. During his inauguration on the first of December, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said that in the coming months he will put out to tender two new open television channels with national coverage, as part of a plan to promote greater competition in the telecommunications sector.
"It is essential to generate greater economic competition, particularly in the telecommunications sector. The goal is that all Mexicans have access to products and services of higher quality and at better prices," he said in his speech.
To achieve his goal, the new president of Mexico said that in the coming days a project that links a series of reforms will be filed in the congress of his country with a view to promoting greater levels of competition in the sectors of television, radio telephony and data services.
After this pronouncement, the board of directors of The Cofetel was in favor of the initiative and assured that it will work hand in hand with the new president to take it forward as soon as possible.
To accompany him and lead this process, Enrique Peña Nieto appointed Gerardo Ruiz Esparza secretary of Communications and Transportation. The new official has a degree in Law from UNAM and a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan.
