Latin America. One of the main loss factors of subscription television operators in Latin America has to do with the use of pirate set-top boxes, a trend that, unfortunately, is growing in our region.
Therefore, the authorities and industry have come together to strengthen controls on this practice. Among the latest actions is the process of re-encryption of signals that have begun the main cable operators in the region, including Movistar, DirectTV and Claro.
The countries affected by this change will be Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, in a process that will take place throughout October. In this way, companies will shield themselves against those who use their signals without paying for the service. That's why they recommend their customers call the service lines to find out what they should do.
For its part, at the end of September the Chilean justice seized about 500 illegal decoders that were in a town in the capital, in the hands of a group of businessmen, who have stated that the confiscation was made illegally.
But this problem goes far beyond making seizures of the decoders, because the sale of these pirated equipment has been increasing dramatically and the most worrying thing is that the configuration and update is easy to obtain through the internet.
And while users think that using this equipment is a good way to save money, they do not know that they are committing various crimes, including violations of intellectual property and telecommunications laws, and even more, according to each legislation of each country.
