International. The concern of television channels and producers to compete with the Internet for the youth audience is increasingly justified. This is demonstrated by the study of Ofocom, which evidenced the preference of young people towards the cell phone over the television, if it were necessary to choose between one of the two.
The research of the telecommunications regulator in England, revealed that young people between 12 and 15 years old do not find in the television their main source of entertainment, only 18% prefer it over the cell phone, while 28% chose the latter and 25% Internet.
The main reason for this phenomenon is that on the Internet you can find more entertainment options, and in many cases also the contents of television on demand or live. In addition, the massification and low cost of smartphones make television have a greater brand challenge.
In contrast, television is preferred by 48% of children surveyed between the ages of five and seven, and only 8% of them opt for cell phones. In addition, according to research, 95% of this age group watches TV almost every day, compared to 43% who do so with the Internet, and 7% with a mobile phone.
These results were achieved by Ofocom after analyzing different studies, including 1,700 interviews in homes, audience trend reports and parent surveys from the Parentport Internet portal.
