The choice of the ISDB-T standard for digital television, made official with the signing of a decree on April 29 by outgoing President Oscar Arias Sánchez, was ratified on May 7 during the inauguration of the new government, headed by Laura Chinchilla.
Among the actions that contributed to the choice of the ISDB-T standard in Costa Rica was the international seminar 'Entering the era of Digital Television: opportunities for a country decision', sponsored by the consulting company Deloitte in collaboration with Chamber of Infocommunication and Technology, in November 2009, which was attended by a representative of the SBTVD Forum. This was the first contact Costa Ricans had with the Brazilian-Japanese standard.
The deployment of digital television is already being handled by the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications, recently occupied by Teófilo de la Torre.
