The National Telecommunications Council of Ecuador accepted the recommendation of the Superintendency of Telecommunications of the same country and adopted the ISDB-T/SBTVD standard for digital terrestrial television.
In the framework of the officialization ceremony, Memoranda of Cooperation were also signed with the representatives of the governments of Japan and Brazil.
After the technical, socioeconomic and international cooperation analysis, the Ecuadorian government is preparing for the process of implementing the standard that will include the blackout of analog transmissions, planned for the next ten years.
In a report published by TV y Video the previous year, Gustavo Orna, director of Radio and Television of the Superintendency of Telecommunications of Ecuador, said that for the selection of the DTV standard the improvement in the quality of the image and audio was considered. and the stability of these in different sectors of the city (the tests were carried out in fixed, mobile and portable points). In addition, it was verified that the digital signal maintained the coverage of the analog and the efficiency in the use of the spectrum was analyzed with the possibility of having multiprogramming, that is, that in the same bandwidth used by an analog channel currently – which is 6MHz – several channels can be transmitted with independent programming (this number it will depend on the encoding used and whether the channel is high definition or standard definition).
In this way, Ecuador joins Peru, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, which opted for the same system.
