AJA Video Systems launched at NAB a portable disc digital recorder that burns files to the Apple ProRes 422 codec directly from the camera, allowing filmmakers, broadcasters and video professionals to avoid the process of re-rendering to an editing codec. This enables immediate access to the full 10-bit, edit-ready trace files of Apple ProRes 422.
The Ki-Pro, as the team awarded at the fair for its innovative technology is called, provides for example direct transfer to the editing format when coupled to the Arriflex D-21 camera. Used with an Apple Final Cut Pro station on set, the producer can have instant real-time playback to make their selection. At the same NAB it was announced that ARRI, Canon and RED gave their realpado to the Ki-Pro for its ability to facilitate digital acquisition workflows. The ability to record ProRes directly from the output of a RED ONE camera on a small portable device, among other applications, was a factor that received praise during the event. The unit, which will be available from June, can be connected to any digital camera via SDI or HDMI, or to any analog camera with multiple input options.
