The Japanese firm Panasonic confirmed at NAB that it is working on the development of a complete equipment system for the production of Full HD high-definition video in 3D.
The foundation of the system, which seeks to be the first in the industry, consists of a professional twin-lens camcorder that would record in the P2 HD solid-state memory format, and a plasma monitor compatible with high definition in 3D.
Today, 3D content creators must build their own recording systems almost by hand, connecting different equipment and experimenting with cameras, lenses and accessories. The P2 HD 3D camcorder will offer great flexibility for production, since when recording to solid state memory cards it has no moving parts and therefore will be compact enough to facilitate video capture under almost any condition.
The 3D technology developed by Panasonic allows the deployment of moving images with Full HD quality for both the right and left eye, making them enjoyable on large screens. Excellent performance has also been achieved in color reproduction and action scenes with fast-moving subjects or objects.
The film industry tends to create more and more productions in the third dimension, while television and video producers have begun to test to work on content of this type. Panasonic, which had already presented in October 2008 the first Home Theater Full HD 3D system with a 103-inch plasma screen and a Blu-ray player, has created a specific work department for the development of content in the third dimension. This is the Advanced Authoring Center, established in February 2009, and part of the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory. In this area we will work together with film studios for the creation of Blu-ray titles in 3D.
