This country approved the North American model ATSC (Advanced Television Sytem Committee) as a standard for Digital Terrestrial Television. The measure was adopted by Decree No. 407-10 issued by the president of that country, Leonel Fernández.
According to José Rafael Vargas, president of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), in September 2015 the analog blackout of Dominican television will occur and from this moment "the development of the most transcendent phase that dominican republic television has had since its origin in the decade of the 50s".
Some dealers have already acquired transmitters and digital equipment, while Indotel is promoting that through the General Directorate of Customs all the facilities are given to radio and television concessionaires so that they can bring their equipment.
Vargas explained that for the adoption of this standard the regulatory body carried out an in-depth study of the reality of the market and the technological conditions of television in the country, as well as two seminars, three workshops and several visits to Europe, The United States and Brazil to learn about the different standards of free-to-air television.
