Latin America. ARRI is introducing a major update with powerful new features that revises and replaces the flagship ALEXA 35, renowned for its superior image quality, ease of use and reliable operation.
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme answers the desires of filmmakers with higher recording speeds, a high-quality next-generation codec that reduces data rates, much longer pre-recording times, lower power consumption, and significantly improved WiFi capabilities. ALEXA 35 Xtreme is available as a new camera or as an upgrade to existing ALEXA 35 cameras.
With frame rates of up to 660 fps, the ALEXA 35 Xtreme eliminates the need for a high-speed secondary camera on most shoots. This streamlines production workflows, saves time and money, and ensures that high-speed shots perfectly match standard speed shots in post-production.
These benefits are made possible by a powerful new main processor, equipped with faster and higher-capacity onboard memory. Speeds of up to 330 fps maintain the camera's 17 levels of dynamic range, while a new "Sensor Overdrive" mode allows you to reach up to 660 fps with an 11-level dynamic range.
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is complemented by ARRICORE, ARRI's next-generation RGB codec, designed to deliver the camera's exceptional image quality at a more affordable cost by reducing data rates. At the same time, flexibility in post-production is ensured, as sensitivity, white balance and hue are not recorded permanently. Switching to ARRICORE is simple because on-set and post-production workflows remain consistent with the existing ALEXA 35 codecs and units. The ARRI ALF4 look file, ARRI textures, metadata, MXF container, and audio will all work in familiar ways.
ARRICORE is launched in beta to actively engage users and accelerate the improvement of their capabilities through direct feedback. Most third-party tools that already use the current ALEXA 35 codecs will also be compatible with ARRICORE.
Pre-recording times are now five times longer with the ALEXA 35 Xtreme, which will simplify high-speed capture for everyone and be essential for documentary filmmakers. The pre-recording time for the ALEXA 35 Xtreme is 30 seconds when recording at 24 fps on Apple ProRes 4444 at the highest resolution (4.6K Open Gate), or a full five minutes when recording at 24 fps on Apple ProRes 422 HQ in HD. These are the longest pre-recording times available on any cinema camera.
Additional improvements include 10% energy savings over the ALEXA 35, as well as better wireless connectivity with accessories and tools such as the ARRI Camera Companion app, thanks to support for the 5GHz WiFi band, WiFi roaming on mesh networks, and automatic reconnection to previously known networks.
Because the camera retains its compact form factor, as well as all mechanical connectors and interfaces, it remains compatible with ARRI's extensive ecosystem of electronic and mechanical accessories. This includes lens mounts, mounts, handles, the AEM-1 Audio Extension Module, the PDM-1 Power Distribution Module, the Camera Companion app, the Hi-5, and the LPS-1 live production system, as well as the 2TB, 1TB, and 1TB Express CODEX Compact Drives.
