Latin America. The Platform of Regulators of the Audiovisual Sector of Latin America (PRAI) held its first extraordinary assembly of the year, marking the beginning of the mandate of the National Television Council of Chile (CNTV) in the presidency of the organization.
The meeting, held in virtual format, brought together representatives of the members, including regulatory bodies and institutions from Argentina, Chile, Spain, Peru, Portugal, Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil; in addition to Costa Rica and Morocco as observer members; to define the main lines of action for the period 2025-2026.
The assembly was inaugurated by the president of CNTV and PRAI, Mauricio Muñoz, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of strengthening regional cooperation in audiovisual regulation.
"Our main objective is to consolidate the PRAI as an Ibero-American benchmark in regulation, promoting democratic values, transparency and protection of audiences," said Mauricio Muñoz.
The assembly was also attended by the vice presidents of the 205-2026 period: Andrea Muñoz, of the Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) of Colombia; and Juan José Garazatua Nuñovero, of the Radio and Television Advisory Council (CONCORTV) of Peru.
Andrea Muñoz highlighted the work of the CRC in the regulation of audiovisual content, guaranteeing diversity and protection of audiences. He stressed the importance of generating consensus in Latin America and that the platform of audiovisual regulators promotes concrete recommendations at the regional level.
"We are at a transcendental moment, at a very important turning point at the international level. We have not been able to have that joint vision and take it to the different regional governance bodies to which we should take it. It is very important that what we build are recommendations with a call to action," he said.
Juan José Garazatúa, for his part, explained the work of Concortv as an autonomous and plural body that works for the development of radio and television in Peru. He highlighted his work in specialized studies on topics such as childhood, adolescence and the treatment of suicide in the media.
"We carry out specialized studies with the participation of public and private organizations that are related to various issues, childhood, adolescence, the elderly or critical issues such as the treatment of suicide," he said.
One of the central points of the day was the presentation of the biannual strategic plan, approved by the Steering Committee on January 10, 2025. This document establishes three priority lines of action: the strengthening of working groups; internal communication and the external positioning of PRAI; and the creation of new alliances with key players in the sector.
Subsequently, the existing working groups were validated: Governance of audiovisual OTT services; Media and Information Literacy (AMI); Gender Perspective; and Disinformation and protection of audiences. It was also proposed to create a fifth working group, focused on the challenges of artificial intelligence in audiovisual regulation.
The session also addressed the incorporation of the Secretariat of Communication of Brazil (SECOM) as an observer member of PRAI.
Finally, President Muñoz announced the launch of the new website (https://2025.prai.tv/), which modernizes the design and facilitates access to relevant information for its members and the general public.
