Chile. Santiago de Chile was the epicenter of the discussion on the digital future of Latin America and the Caribbean, where representatives of different governments meet to share experiences and define a joint agenda on the matter.
Within the framework of the Ninth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held at ECLAC, Chile assumed the presidency of the region's Digital Agenda for the period 2024 – 2025. This milestone highlights the country's leadership in the development of telecommunications in Latin America and the Caribbean, and will guide regional strategies around the use of digital technologies for the sustainable development of countries and their inhabitants.
The Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, pointed out that "the digital society is presenting us with more and more challenges, as well as more opportunities. In this sense, we have to be prepared to lead the public policies we have and be able to accompany and always put people at the center, ensuring that no one is left behind in this process that we see with so much enthusiasm. In this sense, the opportunity to be able to share experiences and at the same time identify opportunities, avoid duplicating efforts and finding those synergies that allow us as a continent to also move forward in areas that are often collective. For example, cybersecurity or digital connectivity require a collaboration of equivalent protocols and that is why we are pleased that we can be in the presence of so many countries, from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe to continue advancing in these matters."
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, said that "digitalization is a reality and as a region we must get on board new technologies that will allow us to improve people's quality of life, but also different optimized production processes, with the benefit that this implies for our countries. In addition, we have other challenges, both in digital literacy and in cybersecurity in which shared experience and working together are valuable tools for the development of each country."
