Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications, IFT, reported that, through the coordination and immediate attention mechanism that was generated to address the effects derived from the impact of Hurricane Otis, reports have been received from the operators of fixed and mobile telecommunications networks, which indicate that these services are gradually being restored, as a result of the progress in the work of the technical staff of the companies to repair their infrastructure affected by the passage of Hurricane Otis in the state of Guerrero.
All service operators are focused on the work of reviewing and restoring their affected infrastructures, so that users and audiences can establish contact with their families and friends, so it is expected that in the following hours greater progress will be made in the reactivation of communications in the localities where services were interrupted due to the effects of the hurricane.
In the case of mobile and fixed networks, the recovery and continuity of services depends on the reactivation of electricity, as well as the possibility of physically accessing the places where the infrastructure is, however, progress is gradually being made, ranging from the recovery of sites by adapting satellite solutions, to the operation of transmission networks.
Regarding the support of satellite technology, providers of these services began the installation of antennas and equipment at strategic aid and rescue points, in Acapulco and Chilpancingo, which has allowed centers such as the Red Cross to have internet service to carry out their care work.
As part of the support for the work of radio amateurs, who have played an important role for communications in this emergency, the IFT granted a special call sign for temporary use, so that the amateur radio community can use it and complement its activities.
For its part, the Chamber of Radio and Television Industry (CIRT) informed this Institute about the impact on the facilities of its affiliates in the state of Guerrero, especially in Acapulco, which has caused the suspension of transmissions and service, a situation in which no date is set to restore the service.
The Institute continues to work and collaborate with operators and authorities for the reactivation of telecommunications and broadcasting services in Guerrero.
