Chile. The latest survey conducted by the National Television Council, CNTV, reveals that adults have decided to accompany children more when watching audiovisual content, either on television or through the Internet.
In 2021, 73% of children between 0 and 5 years of age consumed audiovisual content accompanied by an adult, 48% of children between 6 and 12 years old, and only 22% of adolescents between 13 and 17 years old.
Today the figures have risen especially in the youngest: 84% (between 0 and 5 years) and 58% (between 6 and 12 years) watch audiovisual content accompanied by an adult. The trend is maintained with respect to previous results, the older the child, the less presence of the adult in the viewing.
The survey also highlights the main concerns of fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, grandfathers and grandmothers, when minors are exposed to audiovisual content. First, 64% of respondents state that their main concern is that they see programs that are inadequate for their stage of development.
Second, the number of hours they watch, with 57% of preferences. And in third place, with 31%, that minors see content that has not been approved by their parents or guardians.
And who chooses what content to watch? Comparing the data obtained in 2021, the autonomy of choice among children from 0 to 12 years old has decreased. In the same way, the trend continues: the older you are, the greater the autonomy of choosing audiovisual content.
Faced with the use of the various devices that exist today so that minors can consume audiovisual content, the Smart TV (54%) and the smartphone (59% of girls and 50% of boys) lead the survey. In addition, between 2021 and 2023 a substantial increase in such use stands out.
The differences can be seen between the age ranges. Regarding the use of Smart TV, the tendency is accentuated that, the older the child is, its use decreases. The opposite happens with the smartphone: the older the children, the greater the use of this device.
