Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications presents the results of the Survey on the Expectations of Telecommunications Markets in Mexico 2023, which provides information on the overview of the sector, trends in the short term and the expectations of companies and experts in the context at the end of 2023.
This report is an effort to know and understand the evolution and behavior of telecommunications in Mexico for the coming years; It considered the implementation of a methodology for the design and application of business trend surveys, which aims to know in general terms and, from a qualitative perspective, the current situation of businesses, as well as their plans and expectations for the immediate future.
The survey – applied to telecommunications companies, suppliers and experts in the sector – was carried out between November 22, 2022 and January 30, 2023, by invitation to 336 participants via email, following a confirmation protocol and telephone follow-up. The report identifies relevant elements and what is expected to be faced in the near future regarding the provision, demand, prices, investment and challenges of telecommunications services.
According to the survey results, the top priority in the sector is the deployment of 5G networks and fiber optic networks, while the main business strategy of operators is investment in these networks. The survey also shows that the main challenge is the evolution of revenues in the sector.
Regarding the expectations of the development of the Telecommunications sector, it is expected that during 2023 the availability of services, the intensity of use and the skills of users will continue to increase. Regarding the impact of technological developments on the digital ecosystem, respondents agree that 5G networks will be the most important innovation, followed by cloud computing, Wi-Fi 6 and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Regarding the behavior of the number of lines or accesses, prices, revenues and investment of services compared to last year, in 2023 it is expected that:
For fixed broadband service
The number of accesses grows between 1% and 4.99%.
Service prices remain unchanged.
The income from this service does not vary and the investment increases between 3% and 9.99%.
Data traffic grows between 3% and 9.99%.
For mobile broadband service
The number of accesses grows between 1% and 4.99%.
Service prices remain the same.
Revenues will increase between 1% to 4.99% and investment will increase between 3% and 9.99%.
Data traffic grows between 3% and 9.99%.
For landline telephony service
The number of service lines will decrease between 1% and 4.99%.
The prices of the service do not present changes.
Opinion divided between the decrease in income or that they do not present changes.
Investment will decrease to 9.99%.
For mobile phone service
Service lines will increase between 1% and 4.99%.
Opinion divided between an increase in service prices between 1% and 4.99% and that these do not change.
Opinion divided between whether revenues are maintained or increased.
Investment grew to 9.99%.
For restricted TV service
The number of accesses grows between 1% and 4.99%.
Service prices remain the same.
Opinion divided between income not changing or growing.
The investment is increased to 9.99%.
For OTT service
The number of subscriptions grows between 1% and 4.99%.
Service prices will increase between 1% and 4.99%.
Investment in services increased to 9.99%.
The survey participants consider positive the presence of OTT services in the sector due to the business opportunity that their packaging represents for operators of traditional telecommunications services. Likewise, they consider positive the interest of other sectors in the implementation and use of private telecommunications networks.
