Ibero opened a degree in transmedia narrative design

Mexico. Today, the entertainment industry requires new and complex ways of telling, designing and producing stories, not limited to a single medium. Instead, successful narrative franchises expand through tools such as animation, illustration, comics, board games, or video games. That is why IBERO opened the degree in Design of Fictions and Transmedia Narratives, unique in Mexico.

"In 2016 we witnessed the tremendous success of Pokémon Go. Pokémon, a franchise that was originally born as a video game, spread to cartoons, movies, and a variety of popular products, including a theme park. When you tell a story in a transmedia way you can expand it, for example, from a book to a movie, from a movie to a video game, from a video game to toys," said Luis Roiz, Coordinator of the Transmedia Fiction and Narrative Design career.

This was the case with Harry Potter and Star Wars, two of the most successful franchises in history. The Harry Potter saga was originally conceived as a series of novels and ended up complementing its story with movies, video games, books derived from the original plot and even an amusement park. On the other hand, Star Wars, which began with three films, extended its story through prequels, sequels and spin-offs materialized in comics, animated series, video games, television specials and action figures. Now, the characters begin to tell other stories, although the concept and the narrative world are the same.

Currently, whether they originate in one medium or another, successful works such as Super Mario, League of Legends, Jumanji, The Witcher, The Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Hello Kitty, Dragon Ball, Transformers, Rick and Morty or narrative universes, such as Marvel, DC or the Monsterverse starring King Kong and Godzilla, expand their stories and economic potential through transmedia narratives.

"The bachelor's degree program in Transmedia Fiction and Narrative Design responds to the current needs of the entertainment industry, so it facilitates the professional integration of its future graduates in studios and companies with an international presence, as well as the possibility of creating large-scale original projects. The degree prepares its students to face the complexity of transmedia projects, offering them a wide variety of technical skills – traditional and digital – narrative models, methodologies and theories used in the industry, as well as the experience of working on projects for real clients." Commented Dr. Miguel Rubio, part of the academic faculty of the career.

Mexican creators such as Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Karla Castañeda, Sofía Carrillo, Rita Basulto and IBERO graduates such as Ricardo Arnaiz, Isaac Miranda, Mariana Gorbea and Juan García, are proof of the important presence of Mexicans in an industry in full growth, to which graduates of the career of Design of Fictions and Transmedia Narratives can integrate.
