New ARRI filters offer range of detuned looks

arri

Latin America. ARRI is launching its new line of Impression V Filters with eight Impression V filters that give an epochal feel to the Signature Prime and Zoom lenses. The four negative diopter filters and four positive diopter filters increase the performance of the image focus, allowing you to create a range of detuned looks for Super 35 or large format with just one set of Signature lenses.

Traditionally the diopters are located on the front of the lenses to reduce their focus distance but the new ARRI Impression V Filters are completely different. When attached to the back of Signature lenses via a magnetic rear filter adapter, they alter the appearance of out-of-focus elements in the image. Known as bokeh, these elements play a significant role in the emotional impact of images.

All bokeh is affected by the Impression V Filters but this is particularly visible in high backlights, which give a much more "doughnut" effect (luminous around the edges) with negative filters, and a more bright ornament effect (luminous in the middle) with positive filters. Generally positive filters give a nostalgic, glamorous feeling, with spiral bokeh, bright skin tones and soft backgrounds; while negative filters provide a grittier appearance, with inward blur and intense, vibrant backgrounds.

arriThe four positive Impression V filters are called IV 070P, IV 140P, IV 230P and IV 330P, while the four negative ones are IV 050N, IV 100N, IV 200N and IV 290N. For both cases, the increase in numbering means a stronger diopter effect. These filters are designed for use with T1.8, where the effect is strongest and the lens scales remain accurate.

ARRI claims that the Impression V Filters work with its latest cameras: ALEXA 35, ALEXA Mini LF, ALEXA LF and ALEXA 65. The filters are sold in a kit containing all eight positive and negative diopters, as well as a foil set, an adjustable torque screwdriver for adding foils, and labelable Velcro fasteners for labeling lenses with in-set filters, all packed in a specially designed aluminum trunk.
