Latin America. Modifying the different barriers that exist in Latin America for the development of 5G telecommunications networks is one of the pending works in the region.
It is important to promote the closing of the digital divide and promote Internet access in the population to advance within the new environment of global digital economy, as highlighted in the study "Need for reforms in telecommunications policies in Latin America", published by 5G Americas.
The study also highlights the importance of removing regulatory barriers that obsoletely delay the deployment of new telecommunications networks. To achieve this objective, the focus is on the need for reforms of laws, institutions, regulations and regulations. Highlighting those cases where there were initiatives of the authorities that allowed the expansion of mobile networks.
"Regulatory changes were not limited to the scope of infrastructure installation permits, some countries have sought courses of action to promote the adoption of mobile technologies, including the exchange of spectrum payments for connectivity, special rules for small cells, spectrum management, reduction of tax rates and the enabling of complementary infrastructure, as fiber optics for communications transport," explained José Otero, vice president of 5G Americas for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Although the development of many of these reforms by the authorities of different countries is not enough, their implementation is a first step forward in the region. The deployment of 5G networks is an enhancer in an economy increasingly based on connectivity, data and the wide and accelerated use of new technologies. Therefore, a strong and competitive telecommunications sector is needed that can face the challenges imposed by the digital society.
