New backhaul technologies for 5G deployments

Latin America. For the successful deployment of 5G, mobile network operators (MNOs) need technologies capable of meeting strict data transmission speeds and strong latency and reliability requirements in increasingly dense networks.

5G Americas, the wireless industry association and the voice of 5G and LTE for the Americas, published a paper called Innovations in 5G Backhaul Technologies, where it highlights new and innovative transport technologies for the backhaul, midhaul and fronthaul of 5G networks.

The fifth generation of wireless cellular ("5G") technology is driving increasing demands on mobile operators' networks, which face the need to improve operational efficiency and reduce the time needed to deliver new high-speed transmission, low-latency network architectures that support emerging use cases.

New wireless options such as Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) and significant advances in fixed lines such as Fiber and Coaxial Hybrid (HFC), Passive Optical Networks (PON), Ethernet, and Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) can be employed to efficiently and cost-effectively transport data between the 5G core network and the 5G radio access network.

Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas, said: "5G network operators today have a growing range of options when it comes to designing, building and managing their networks. Operators can now choose from a variety of options for wireless and fixed-line transport to address the specific topologies and use cases they envision for their mobile wireless network."

Innovations in 5G Backhaul Technologies delves into these new 5G transportation technologies, providing details on their specific advantages and disadvantages. Factors such as point-in-time implementation, deployment scenario, existing infrastructure and market situation are addressed in great detail.

One such key innovation is Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB), which was standardized in 3GPP Release 16 and optimized again in Release 17. IAB reconditions some of the existing spectrum employed in the aerial 5G radio interface for backhaul purposes as well. This technology has generated strong interest in the mobile industry, as IAB is anticipated to provide a cost-efficient and fast-to-market backhaul solution.

Ranjeet Bhattacharya, Senior Director of Solutions and co-leader of the project, stated: "Optimized backhaul is a key challenge for the efficient deployment of 5G, and innovative wireless solutions such as Integrated Access and Backhaul could introduce revolutionary change."

This paper covers the technological aspects of IAB that are part of the standard, their use cases and deployment considerations, and an overview of ongoing research and studies in the industry regarding the future evolution of IAB.

In addition to IAB, Innovations in 5G Backhaul Technologies also discusses the following aspects:
key requirements for 5G transport and various technology options available
overview of business incentives presented by alternative transport technologies
Details on HFC, PON, Ethernet and WDM technologies regarding architecture, business incentives, recent developments, deployment scenarios, future trends, etc.
In addition, recent advances in hybrid coaxial fiber (HFC) networks, passive optical networks (PON), and Ethernet make these solutions equally promising options for 5G transport. Both HFC and PON are already widely deployed in areas where 5G will see the most demand, specifically in densely populated urban and urban environments. Leveraging existing HFC and PON deployments significantly reduces time to market as well as the cost of deploying 5G.

Dave Morley, Director of 5G Technology and Operations at Shaw Communications, and co-leader of the project, said, "While dark fiber reaches 65 percent of macro sites in North America today, further densification of networks will require operators to take advantage of other efficient transportation options such as HFC, which currently reaches nearly every building on the North American continent."
