Latin America. From Tequila, Jalisco, to the Amazon in Colombia, different settings throughout Latin America have become some of the most important characters within the Netflix original series. These stories bring the region's natural wealth, the strength and persistence of its communities, as well as new perspectives, to the screens of millions of people around the world.
Siempre Bruja - Cartagena, Colombia
What better place than Cartagena to be the scene of a story of a seventeenth-century witch who travels back in time? The famous Colombian city, declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, shows a history full of mysticism and dark arts.
The second season of Siempre Bruja, to be released soon, was filmed in other cities in Colombia, such as Bogotá and Honda.
Monarca - Tequila, Jalisco
Tequila, one of Mexico's magical towns, is one of the locations in the Mexican series Monarca, which chronicles the battle between three brothers to lead a tequila-based business empire.
The agave fields, the historic seventeenth-century haciendas and the historic center of the city are some of the places that are now traveling the world through the series and are attracting the attention of tourists, according to the local tourist office.
Frontera Verde - Leticia (Amazonas), Colombia
The Colombian series Frontera Verde was filmed in more than 50 different locations in the Amazon, including the city of Leticia, various communities between Leticia and Tarapacá and the Amazon River. The series was supported by a production team of 150 people, of whom 30 were locals from the Amazon community.
The rainforest also made its appearance in the second season of Chef's Table under the season of chef Alex Atala.
Our Planet - Paracas, Peru
The Peruvian coastal city of Paracas, home to sea lions, Humboldt penguins, dolphins and flamingos, makes its appearance in the documentary series Nuestro Planeta, which focuses on the diversity of habitats in the world. Also, it is a tourist place with more than 300 thousand visitors a year.
The realization of Our Planet took about four years, with a team of 600 people.
Apache - Fort Apache, Argentina
The neighborhood of Buenos Aires where the famous Argentine player of Boca Juniors, Carlos Tévez, grew up, is one of the main locations of the Apache series, the story portrays the life of the footballer including his first steps in the football club.
The filming of Apache in Fuerte lasted 5 months and included more than 100 extras, originally from that neighborhood.
Las crónicas del taco - Sonora, Mexico
To talk about the carne asada taco is to talk about Sonora, one of the largest states in Mexico. The fourth episode of Las crónicas del taco tells us the story of this dish that represents us in the world, while giving us a tour of communities like Matape and cities like Hermosillo. According to experts, Sonora is one of the places where the best roast meat in the world is made. Pure delight!
The Chosen One - Natividade, Tocantins, Brazil
The mysterious village Aguazul from the Brazilian series The Chosen One is actually Natividade, a municipality in the state of Tocantins, Brazil. The colonial architecture, festivals, folklore and food of this site become one more character of this production.
Natividade was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, so Netflix worked hand in hand with the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage of Brazil (IPHAN) to ensure the proper preservation of the historical monuments that appear in the series. In addition, El Escogido was a source of employment for the locals; 100% of the extras that appear in the series are Brazilian citizens.
Sintonía - Jaguaré, São Paulo, Brazil
The Jaguaré Slam favela in São Paulo, Brazil is one of the locations featured in the series Sintonía, a story that explores the universe of music, crime and religion in São Paulo from the perspective of three young people who grew up together. This location is rarely used in productions, usually portraying the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
Chef's Table - Los Andes, Peru
Peruvian chef Virgilio Martínez finds in los Andes the techniques and ingredients to create dishes that connect his customers with the Earth. The last chapter of the third season of Chef's Table shows the role that Peru's natural and cultural wealth has in the life and creations of the chef.
Our Planet - The Atacama Desert, Chile
At 4,000 meters high from the Andean highlands, the driest place on Earth makes its appearance in the documentary series Our Planet, which focuses on the diversity of habitats in the world.
In addition to the Atacama Desert, 14 Latin American locations stand out in the series, including: Loreto Bay National Park (Mexico), La Macarena (Colombia) and Nahuel Huapi National Park (Argentina).
