Increases offer of channels in Pay-TV plans in Mexico

Mexico. The Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) makes available to the public the Report on the Evolution of Plans and Rates of Fixed Telecommunications Services 2017-2018 (Report), which contains a comparative analysis of the current offer to which the user had access between the second quarter of 2017 and the second quarter of 2018.

One of the primary objectives of the Report is to identify, by contracting modality, the evolution of the offer that each of the concessionaires make available to users, in terms of the nominal amount of the monthly rent and the basket of services contemplated, such as download speed, local calls, calls / minutes to cell phone, calls / minutes of international long distance (LDI), number of channels and number of televisions included.

Overall, the offer in 2018 improved from the previous year. In most plans you can identify an increase in the basket of services included in the plans, in their different contracting modalities, and a decrease in the nominal amount of the monthly rent.

Below are some of the main findings of the Evolution Report of Fixed Telecommunications Services Plans and Rates 2017-2018:

Single play
In the case of the internet service in the single play mode, for the second quarter of 2018, from a monthly rent of 301 pesos, 100% of the plans included a download speed greater than or equal to 10 Mbps; while, at the same period in 2017, for that same rate, download speeds were offered in the range of 5 to 9 Mbps.

In the second quarter of 2018, in the fixed telephony service in the single play mode, it was identified that 86% of the plans with a monthly income of 300 pesos give the user access to a basket of local calls / minutes, mobile and LDI unlimited. For the second quarter of last year, only plans between 301 and 500 pesos included local and unlimited LDI calls.

Of the single play pay TV plans with a monthly rent of between 301 and 500 pesos, 56% included between 50 and 100 channels until the second quarter of 2017; while, for the second quarter of 2018, for that same monthly rent, 56% of the plans included more than 100 channels.

Double play
In the fixed internet service plus fixed telephony in the double play mode, for the second quarter of 2018, for a monthly rent of 300 pesos or less, the user had access to plans with a download speed of up to 20 Mbps and local calls / minutes, to mobile and LDI. In comparison, in the second quarter of 2017, users who paid the same monthly rent had download speeds of up to 4 Mbps and local, mobile and LDI calls/minutes.

For the second quarter of 2018, 30% of the double play plans with fixed internet plus pay TV, with a monthly rent of 301 to 500 pesos, included 10 to 20 Mbps of download speed, while in the same period of 2017 the proportion was 23%. For that same price, 9% included more than 100 TV channels in the second quarter of last year; and for that same period this year, the percentage rose to 22%.

For the fixed telephony service plus pay TV in double play, in the second quarter of 2018, it was identified that 100% of the plans offered to the user for a monthly rent of between 301 and 500 pesos had access to a basket of local calls / minutes, mobile and LDI unlimitedly, while in the second quarter of 2017 only 83% of the plans gave unlimited calls/minutes to mobile or LDI. In that same price range, by June 2017, only 17% of the plans offered more than 100 channels, while at the same cut in 2018 it was 25%.

Triple play
From the offer analyzed for the fixed internet service plus fixed telephony and pay television in the triple play modality for the second quarter of 2018, it was identified that from a monthly income of 300 pesos or less, the user has access to a basket of unlimited calls / minutes to fixed, mobile and LDI; an internet download speed of 10 to 20 Mbps; and 50 to 100 television channels. In contrast, in the second quarter of 2017, for that same price, the plans offered to users included 5 to 9 Mbps of download speed and the same basket of call services and number of television channels.

The IFT has various tools and studies that provide users with useful information about telecommunications services; one of them is the Telecommunications Services Comparator, which allows to compare, in a simple and detailed way, characteristics of the plans of mobile and fixed services, in their different modalities of contracting, available in the country.

The data contained in the Report on the Evolution of Plans and Rates of Fixed Telecommunications Services 2017-2018, as well as the Comparator, are strictly informative and can be consulted on the site http://www.ift.org.mx/portalusuarios
