Cartagena welcomes AndinaLink

Colombia. The Cartagena convention center will host the 22nd version of the fair on telecommunications and convergent technologies, AndinaLink Colombia,  which will offer cable and triple play providers, content and telecommunications technology, a space to negotiate, update, collaborate and create.

The academic offer for 2015 is wide. It will feature the technological update seminar that will have as its theme the explosion of the internet and online video. In addition, the FICA Forum will address as its main theme the unstable subscription television market and its unpredictable changes in the world.

Technological update

In its technological update seminar, AndinaLink will propose a reflection on the internet, speed, mobility and online video consumption. It seeks to answer the question: how is cable adapted to this new digital ecosystem?

Part of taking into account the sidereal speeds of internet access added to a massive consumption of online video that impact on the networks. To this is added a new requirement that is that of mobility, since the new devices require a wireless connection.

Linear television is ceding space to on-demand consumption because customers prefer to choose what to watch and when to do it. On the other hand, the screen of the traditional TV receiver is giving space to other screens and mobile devices. All this has a significant impact on transport networks and also affects the planning of new services.

The emergence of OTT service providers constitutes a new competition that uses network resources to reach the customer. The main objective is to meet the new requirements associated with these changes by making the most of the installed capacity.

To develop these topics, you will have conferences such as: cable strategy versus OTT supply; we are ready to migrate to IPTV; impact on customer devices; impact on Subscriber boxes (STBs); data networks within the home; impact on the distribution platform; evolution of Docsis technology; fiber optic technology up to the house; alternatives to Docsis & FTTH; sizing of an OTT; standards and measurements in HFC systems; fiber optic systems and IP and Triple Play services.

FICA Forum

During the three days of the fair, a new version of the FICA Forum will be held in parallel, which will analyze from different aspects the unstable subscription television market and its Unpredictable changes in the world.

Part of the basis that the new platforms for distribution of content on the Internet, called OTT (Over The Top) based on a streaming model (PoadCast), are significantly transforming the telecommunications ecosystems in the world, protected by net neutrality. Multinationals are offering thousands of high quality audiovisual products in real time and at a much lower cost than the traditional market offer, they manage to do so without paying taxes, taking advantage of the network infrastructure of local telecommunications concessionaires (BroadCast).

The latter are discovering that OTTs are an unfair competition that they cannot control by virtue of net neutrality and that it is destroying their traditional business models, while the traffic on their network is growing exponentially, that is, while their income decreases, they substantially increase their expenses by growing the consumption of bandwidth in their networks, demanding a greater technological infrastructure without receiving any economic compensation in return.

This forum will provide some options to questions that concern the sector: how to stream live OTT video content cost-effectively? How to compete in the era of Digital TV with limited investments? How does the "IP tsunami" affect the cable operator? How to implement an interactive experience across multiple devices in just 30 days? OTT business and options for small operators?

A special chapter will have the theme of piracy, a crime that continues to affect all pay-TV actors and that is reflected in the region with similar intensity.  It is estimated that each year Colombia and the industry may lose up to US$100 million due to illegality. That is why the actions being carried out jointly by the private and public sectors to combat this scourge will be presented.

The challenge for this year at AndinaLink is great. The fair should exceed the figures of 2014, when it had 1,600 attendees from 15 countries, 90 exhibitors and 12 academic sessions.
