With 5G advances telepresence and extended reality

5g americas

Latin America. 5G Americas released new work called Mobile Communications Towards 2030, which details how the industry will continue to develop and evolve wireless communications networks for consumers and businesses beyond what we know today as 5G.

Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas, said: "While 5G is at the start of a long era of innovation with a comprehensive roadmap of exciting optimizations, the work of researching and studying the next generation of possibilities is already underway. It is imperative that the Americas region develop and maintain its leadership, bringing together input from wireless operators and providers, as well as academia, other vertical industries, and government."

The use cases for the next generation of emerging wireless communications are still several years away from being formulated, but they include some exciting opportunities. Early use cases may include multisensory telepresence and extended reality (XR) immersion as well as the use of digital twins in Industry 4.0 cyber-physical systems. Additional use cases can include holographic teleportation, tactile and haptic communications, and many more features.

The impacts of wireless on vertical industries could include opportunities in precision crops and livestock, biosensor monitoring in public health, advanced driving assistance and autonomous driving for transportation systems, first response systems that enable rapid data collection from sensors and real-time situational awareness, and government and defense systems that use ubiquitous connectivity.

In addition, the white paper provides insights into the vision and requirements that will need to be met to make next-generation wireless networks a reality. Emerging applications may require very high data rates in the Tbps range for digital twins and touch feedback, extremely broad coverage for rural or defense needs, and reliability of up to "seven nines" (99.99999% uptime) for remote control requirements and intense digital twins.

Mobile Communications Towards 2030 looks at the following:
- Activities in North America in the context of work on the next generation of wireless communications
- Review of activities worldwide (China, Japan, Europe, Korea, Taiwan and India)
- Use cases (multisensory telepresence and immersion, Industry 4.0, digital twins, and advances in different vertical industries)
- Technological requirements and evolution of networks
- Enablers of technology and trends
- Leadership of North America

Brian Daly, Assistant Vice President, Industry Standards and Partnerships, AT&T and co-leader of the technical group that drafted the work, commented, "While 5G is still in the early part of its lifespan and is being evolved and optimized through upcoming versions of 3GPP as deployments continue globally, we recognize the need to begin promoting early commitments to create a 5G market to Proxima G and ensure that North America continues to lead technological development. Groundwork to write the next exciting chapter of the wireless revolution is beginning, with academia and U.S.-based partnerships seeking technology advancement, along with the U.S. government focusing on forging fruitful partnerships with the private sector."
