Sony presented its Venice 2 film camera

sony venice 2

Latin America. Sony introduced the new VENICE 2 camera, its new and iconic model, and the latest addition to its line of high-end digital cinematic cameras.

The VENICE 2 camera builds on the strengths of the original VENICE model and incorporates new features, such as a compact design, internal recording and the choice of two different sensors: the new full-frame 8.6K sensor or the original 6K sensor from the VENICE camera. The VENICE 2 also inherits popular functions from the original VENICE camera, such as color science, double base ISO value and built-in 8-step ND filters.

New sensor
Alongside the new full-frame 8.6K CMOS image sensor (8640 x 5760), the VENICE 2 camera offers excellent image quality with a total latitude of 16 stepsi to capture beautiful images with incredible separation of color and detail from shadows. The camera also inherits the color science of the original VENICE camera, well known for its natural skin tones.

The CineAlta VENICE 2 8K camera has a unique double base ISO value of 800/3200, allowing filmmakers to capture incredibly clean, cinematic-looking images with a wide variety of lighting conditions. It supports full-frame, full-frame anamorphic, and Super35 formats, all with a minimum resolution of 4K, making it an incredible and versatile camera system for both cinematographers and producers.

To illustrate the strengths of the VENICE 2 camera and its new 8.6K sensor, Sony worked alongside several industry-leading cinematographers to assess the camera's image quality in some isolated cinematic shots, without using any professional cinema lighting.

Improvements suggested by users
The VENICE 2 camera retains many of the features that made the original VENICE camera a success, including the dual base ISO value, built-in 8-stop ND filters, compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, including all PL-mount and Native Sony E-mount lenses that support the addition of adapters for a wide variety of lenses.

Thanks to feedback received directly from the production community, the VENICE 2 camera adopted a smaller and lighter design than the original VENICE, while maintaining intuitive operation. Despite being 44mm smaller and about 10% lighter, the VENICE 2 camera structure supports internal recording in X-OCN, Apple 4K ProRes 4444 and 422 HQ format without the AXS-R7 recorder, allowing for greater ease of use in a more compact and lightweight body.

The 8.6K image sensor, which offers different resolutions selectable by the user, allows recording in various modes.

Interchangeable sensor design
To offer even greater flexibility in location, the chassis of the VENICE 2 camera incorporates a unique function to exchange the image sensor block. The camera can be used with both the 8.6K sensor and the original 6K sensor block. v The camera will automatically recognize the change and start without the need to swap or reinstall the firmware, offering greater flexibility on site. The original 6K sensor will support higher frame rates.

Availability
It is planned to start shipments of VENICE 2 cameras with 8.6K image sensor in February 2022, and the VENICE 2 model with 6K image sensor in March 2022.

In addition, the VENICE 2 6K model can be used with the current VENICE extension system and the launch of a new extension system for the VENICE 2 8K camera is scheduled for early 2023.
