MTC continues to disrupt illegal radio stations

radios ilegales

Peru. The seizure team of the Directorate of Sanctions in Communications of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) disrupted two illegal broadcasting systems, which had been operating from the top of the Nuevo Amanecer hill, in the district of Puente Piedra.

The "pirate" radios broadcast to the districts of Puente Piedra, Comas and Carabayllo using frequency bands not authorized by the MTC. This represents the crime of aggravated theft of the radio spectrum, since it generates interference in the signals of various local radio stations. In addition, it causes considerable economic losses to the Peruvian State.

The intervened stations operated under the name of "Radio Antena Uno" and "Radio La Titular", in the modulated frequency 95.2 MHz and 90.8 MHz respectively. In both cases, the seizure of the transmission systems, composed of a dipole spire antenna and a yagui antenna installed on a five-meter-high mast, together with their transmitter equipment, which were buried at the top of the Nuevo Amanecer hill, was achieved.

"One of the main risk factors in the operation of these informal radios is the interference they can generate in aeronautical communications. That sets up a major danger to public safety. Therefore, the MTC uses advanced technology and drones to turn off these illegal signals, "said the general director of Communications Inspections and Sanctions, Ángel Paz.

The districts of San Juan de Lurigancho and Comas are the areas where the highest incidence of pirate radios are reported in the capital. Meanwhile, Cajamarca, Puno, Huánuco, La Libertad, Lambayeque and Piura presented the highest rate of interventions at the national level.

This illegal act establishes as a crime of aggravated theft of the radio spectrum, provided for in the Criminal Code and punishable by deprivation of liberty of up to six years. Likewise, the illegal provision of the broadcasting service is punishable by a fine ranging from S/ 132 440 to S/ 220 000.

In addition, the contracting of spaces for the transmission of advertising and institutional messages, through illegal broadcasting stations, constitutes an administrative infraction typified as serious and sanctioned with a fine ranging from S /. 44 440 to S/ 132 000.
