Colombia. The National Directorate of Copyright granted precautionary measures of blocking against an allegedly illegal distributor that distributed content online. The judge's measures ordered the immediate cessation of illegal online transmission, as well as the immediate blocking by all internet providers in the country and to prevent access to the IP and URL that distribute the content illegally.
The measure was taken against IPTV Colombia Premium, which allegedly infringed copyright by retransmitting without authorization the signal of different programmers through an internet server and charging a monthly subscription for this service.
"The precautionary measure blocking IPTV Colombia Premium sets a very important precedent, because online piracy is a different and novel form of piracy that requires understanding and training on the modus operandi, quantification and estimation of damages and requires the design of an effective strategy to mitigate this scourge. In addition, and in consideration of the novel component, the judicial authorities are very careful in the exhaustive review of the evidence before granting this type of measures," explained Martha Ochoa, leader of the Alliance against Piracy.
According to the Center for Telecommunications Studies of Latin America, digital piracy in Latin America causes potential losses of USD 733 million a year, counting only users who are not subscribed to the most important OTT services, according to Ether projections.
"The harmonious articulation of the industry is fundamental to achieving forceful impacts against piracy. Programmers, content providers, security and technology companies and operators will continue to collaborate with the authorities to fight this scourge," Ochoa said.
