Peru authorizes initial deployment of 5G for commercial use

mtc, 5gPeru. The Ministry of Transport and Communications authorized two telecommunications operators to implement services with 5G technology for fixed wireless Internet in the spectrum blocks they have in the 3.5 GHz band.

In this way, Peru is at the forefront of the region by giving the green light to this technology, where few countries have given this authorization to date. 5G technology will initially be implemented under the NSA standard in existing networks.

"It is important to encourage the initial deployment of 5G technology, even more so if in the last year Internet data traffic grew more than 60% on the fixed network. Users demand more speed at lower prices, and the way to achieve this will be with 5G. This first stage will allow us to test the technology," said the Minister of Transport and Communications, Eduardo González.

It should also be noted that the planning stage of the new tender for the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz spectrum bands has been completed. This will allow operators to have a greater amount of spectrum for the future massification of 5G and whose value is estimated to be close to S/ 5000 million. In March, the mechanism for the public tender will be defined and a schedule will be announced.

"To sustain the economic reactivation, it is essential that we accelerate the entry of 5G to its full potential with this new contest. Several studies estimate that the adoption of this technology will contribute to increasing GDP by up to 1% by 2030. Peru cannot be oblivious to this new development opportunity," added Deputy Communications Minister Diego Carrillo.

When 5G expands through the bands of the new tender to be tendered in 2022, it is projected that the speed offer will be able to increase up to 10 times and will allow better uses in services such as telemedicine, teleeducation, among other applications.
