5G networks can simplify complex operations

Latin America. 5G wireless technologies are predicted to enable revolutionary new applications for consumers and businesses through massive data transfers at ultra-low latencies. To do so, networks require a higher level of data management.

Therefore, 5G Americas announced the publication of a paper called Administration, Orchestration and Automation, which details the great challenges involved in the MANO and the proposed solutions to develop and operate a 5G network full of functionalities.

In recent years, the telecommunications industry has gone through a rapid digital transformation that introduced cloud-native concepts, including the division of control and user planes, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), application and network virtualization, and now automation. However, ultra-low-latency 5G, with the assistance of intelligent databases, analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (AA) systems, is opening up new opportunities in streaming time and labor-intensive tasks across networks.

To demonstrate the capabilities of applied MANO, 5G Americas' Administration, Orchestration and Automation work offers:

  • A glimpse of the 5G System and the challenges it presents for the Operations Support System (OSS)
  • New and optimized OSS solution propositions for the management, orchestration and automation of 5G networks
  • Overviews of key new technologies powering a 5G network and the Operations Management and Management (OAM) challenges to be addressed
  • Summarizes recent developments in 5G OAM within the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)

Indeed, according to a 2018 report by TM Forum, up to 72 percent of 5G revenue growth depends on the transformation of business and operational support systems (OSS/BSS). The business benefits of 5G depend on the development of enhanced, automated, and integrated management and operation capabilities.

Ehud Riesenberg, Cisco's Director of Product Management and joint project leader, said: "AI and machine learning can revolutionize the way service assurance is delivered and thus significantly reduce timeframes, as well as simplify business and operational processes. This is where well-structured management and orchestration (MANO) will become an integral part of the smooth running of 5G networks."

The 5G Americas white paper also identifies the need to build network architecture around real-time distributed service assurance, using network segmentation technology to deliver ultra-reliable low-latency or optimized mobile broadband capabilities to users, as identified in service level agreements.

Riza Hassan, Sprint Solutions Architect, OSS strategy and planning and joint project leader, said: "5G network technologies will produce a massive amount of actionable management data that will need to be collected, processed and worked on to enable new 5G use cases. OSS capabilities will continue to evolve to meet these new requirements."
