Piracy loses $1 billion a year

Argentina. Ángel Melguizo, president of the Board of Directors of ASIET, described the damages caused by piracy to the general society, during the International Conference, he stressed that piracy "matters to us all".

In the panel titled "Piracy: New Forms and Resources. How to combat it", also composed of Federico Villalba Díaz, Prosecutor of Criminal, Contraventional and Misdemeanor Jurisdiction; Virginia Cervieri, managing partner at Cervieri Monsuarez y Asociados Uruguay; and Sergio Piris, manager of Criminal Advice and Technological Crimes of Telecom, Melguizo said: "When we are talking about piracy, there is more and more a convergence of everyone, we care about everyone, not only television operators. I am going to focus on the latest, that is, what is done in the fight against piracy, only with that fight can we generate the knowledge economy. That is an engine of growth that Latin America has. The orange economy is the culture, distribution and services it requires, such as advertising and others. It is a young economy, in Latin America, one in 4 is under 29 years old. It is essentially urban. We have everything to develop it."

"We have several governments," he added, "that are driving this economy, but none are making a determined fight against piracy. 27% of households consume pirate services. There are 110 million Internet users who consult or consume pirated or similar portals. Only by ending this can we develop the Orange Economy. Every time piracy is used, not only the players in the sector are lost, but all those who use it also lose. $1,000 billion is lost to the use of online piracy. We must join more actors to coordinate efforts and to develop the orange economy together, and end piracy. If we fail to convince citizens of the benefits of fighting piracy, it is very difficult to succeed.

We are going to start an ASIET awareness campaign. These types of campaigns, communication and education, can be very powerful."

In turn, Virginia Cervieri said: "There have been resounding victories, years ago this struggle began. We have achieved several success stories, such as Roja Directa and Pelispedia."

Federico Villalba Díaz, for his part, described: "In Argentina there are cases in progress for several years, especially with the new modalities. With the internet, the possibility of modalities has multiplied. We are working on a chapter for the penal code that contemplates the new crimes, which are linked to the modalities of the internet. It is necessary to respect international agreements, they require action in these aspects. In addition, avoiding taxes affects the state's ability to provide services and generate infrastructure, and creates black jobs."

"Piracy," he added, "is like pollution, it corrodes in time and in a little noticeable way. It affects cultural products and the possibility of investing in them by unprotecting creativity and investment."

Sergio Piris highlighted: "Argentina is a country committed to the fight against piracy. At Telecom, we have a team dedicated to this. We are dedicated to all types of piracy, not just the internet. To give you an idea, there are pirate companies with more than a thousand customers. In the case of, Flow detected piracy attempts and made an agreement with Mercado Libre. We take down all the illegal offer every day from ML, and the cases that allow it we bring them to justice. And we've even done raids."
