Pay-TV customers receive alerts of natural disasters

Brazil. Rio Grande do Sul subscribers can receive natural disaster alerts on their Pay-TV. This is the continuation of the Pay-TV Alert Notification pilot project in the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná. With the completion of testing and validation of the solution in the pilot, the implementation schedule will apply nationwide.

Anatel coordinates with mobile operators, Pay-TV operators and agencies related to Civil Defense the implementation of the system of notification of natural disaster risk alerts with the population.

The alerts are sent by the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad) and the Civil Defense of the states and municipalities, on the verge of events such as floods, floods, landslides, windstorms and hailstorms.

By the end of 2019, subscribers to services across the country will receive emergency alerts based on the following schedule.

- Publicidad -

How it works
The pay-TV client will receive a 10-second pop-up alert message with the option for the subscriber to close the pop-up window if desired.

Subscribers will not need to register to receive interest in receiving emergency notifications through pay TV, nor can they block the receipt of messages.

Users will be informed about the start of notifications through the media and also by sending pop-up messages with the message: "CIVIL DEFENSE: RISK ALERTS are now on your TV. Stay tuned!"

Notification of natural disasters via pay TV is complementary to forwarding text message (SMS) alerts for the most severe cases. The nationalization project to send emergency alerts by SMS was completed in 2017. In total, more than 700 million messages were triggered to 6.7 million mobile phone customers nationwide between February 2017 and August 2019.

This new tool has been integrated into a single functional architecture. Therefore, the Civil Defense technician at the time of issuing the alert determines the content, geographical coverage and communication channels (SMS and pay TV) to be used.
