Peru advances in the implementation of 5G

Peru. 5G is the cutting-edge technology by which Peruvians who connect to the internet will enjoy 10 times more speed in their navigation. In turn, the 3.5 GHz frequency has been identified as the "digital path" par excellence for "5G", and the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) is preparing its reorganization to guarantee real competition between mobile companies.

"The MTC continues to clear the digital paths so that users can enjoy state-of-the-art and high-quality services. This increase will have a positive impact on the economic, social and educational activities carried out by citizens on the Internet," said Virginia Nakagawa, Deputy Minister of Communications.

Along these lines, Ministerial Resolution No. 523-2019-MTC/01.03 was pre-published in the official newspaper El Peruano, which proposes the identification and channeling of the frequency range 3 400 – 3 800 MHz (3.5 GHz), so that its allocation for Advanced Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) services is available and, in this way, promote the introduction and expansion of 5G technology.

In this way, telecommunications specialists, representatives of operating companies, members of the academy and citizens in general, may issue their comments, proposals and suggestions regarding this initiative, during a period of 15 calendar days; in compliance with the leading role of the ERM and based on the principle of transparency to give predictability to the market.

"This proposal consists of identifying the largest available spectrum that guarantees real equality of access to mobile operators operating in the 3.5 GHz band, which will allow establishing the appropriate technical conditions for the deployment of 5G in the country, and a framework of effective competition," said Nakagawa.

In addition, it is proposed to channel the bands in 5 MHz blocks to provide transmission capacity at high speeds and a more intensive use of mobile data by promoting the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities.

"As a result of this public consultation, it is expected to expand the spectrum identified in the 3.5 GHz band and increase the radio spectrum cap for the mid-bands to 280 MHz," she added.

Lift reserve of bands 2.3 and 2.5 GHZ
Likewise, the lifting of the reserve of the 2.3 GHz and 2.5 GHz bands was approved, through Ministerial Resolution No. 522-2019-MTC/01.03. This measure allows operators to implement new and better functionalities in the use of radio spectrum allocation.

It also promotes the adoption of advanced technologies for the provision of better telecommunications services, with higher levels of quality and at more accessible rates.
