Mexico. The Senate of the Republic ratified, by a qualified majority, Ramiro Camacho Castillo as Commissioner of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) for a period of nine years.
In accordance with the procedure established in article 28 of the Constitution, on December 20, 2018, the Evaluation Committee in charge of carrying out the selection process of IFT Commissioners, composed of the heads of the Bank of Mexico, the National Institute for the Evaluation of Education and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, sent to the President of the Republic the list of four candidates who met the requirements and who, in the respective examinations, obtained the highest passing grades.
Thus, on January 30, the President of the Republic sent to the Senate, for ratification, the proposal for Camacho Castillo to occupy the position of Commissioner, replacing María Elena Estavillo Flores, who will conclude her term on February 28.
Prior to his ratification as Commissioner, Camacho Castillo served as a Comparative Regulation Researcher at the IFT Study Center since 2017. He was also Director General of Economic Consultation for three years.
At the Federal Competition Commission (Cofeco) he served as Deputy Director General of Competition Studies (2012-2014), Director of Studies and Concentrations (2011-2012) and Director of Monopolistic Studies and Practices (2008-2011).
Camacho Castillo has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Guadalajara, a master's degree in Energy Economics from the Enrico Mattei School (Italy), in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (United States) and in Operations Research from unam.
He is also a PhD candidate in Economics from the University of Maryland-College Park and has been a professor at the University of Guadalajara.
Camacho Castillo will serve as IFT Commissioner for the period from March 1, 2019 to February 29, 2028.
