Mexico. With more than 50 projects in different stages of production in Mexico, including original content and co-productions for 2019 and 2020, Netflix makes a big bet on the Mexican market, which is complemented by the opening of its offices in Mexico City for this year.
In the framework of the conference FORO: an original event of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, executive director of content at Netflix, met with the creative community to talk about the importance of Mexico in the world of entertainment and the company's plans for the future.
"The wealth of talent in front of and behind the cameras that Mexico has was key in the decision we made 4 years ago when we started our original production strategy internationally with Club de Cuervos. Since then, we have continued to expand our investment and continue to provide a platform for Mexican talent to continue to be recognized around the world."
Netflix confirmed four local movies currently in different stages of development that will come to the service in the next two years. Projects include Como caído del cielo, a musical comedy inspired by the songs of iconic Mexican performer Pedro Infante, starring Omar Chaparro (Overboard, No manches Frida, La boda de Valentina) and Ana Claudia Talancón (Perfectos desconocidos, El recluso, El crimen del padre Amaro), written and directed by Pepe Bojórquez (Más sabe el diablo por viejo); Fondeados, with Marcos Bucay (Club de Cuervos; Yo, Potro) in his debut as a director and feature film writer; Daddy Wanted, a family film produced by Corazon Films; and Ahí te encargo, a modern look at the romantic comedy, written by Leonardo Zimbrón and Tiaré Scanda and produced by Traziende Films.
Rio Grande, Rio Bravo is a project of five documentary short films with Gael García Bernal as executive producer and produced by Elena Fortes and Daniela Alatorre of Non-Fiction, and includes directors such as Trisha Ziff, Juan Carlos Rulfo and Everardo González, telling stories that happen on the border between Mexico and the United States. In addition, other documentaries will be released before the end of the year that touch on topics such as historical events, crime, sport and gastronomy.
The original Mexican series will be joined by several new projects, including Los corruptores, based on the novel of the same name by Jorge Zepeda Patterson, and the teenage series Sofía H., both produced by Lemon Films; Bandidos, produced by Leonardo Zimbrón and created by Alejandro Brugues and Esteban Orozco; El Club, which is already in its production phase, produced by Argos, created by Camila Ibarra and starring Alejandro Speitzer, Minnie West, Jorge Caballero, Axel Arenas and Arcelia Ramírez; and an as-yet-untitled thriller produced by The Immigrant, executive produced by Camila Jiménez and Silvana Aguirre.
Previously announced projects that will begin filming this year include Selena: The Series, based on the life of Selena Quintanilla and produced by Campanario; the second season of La casa de las flores by Manolo Caro; and American Jesus, based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar and produced by brothers Leopoldo and Everardo Gout. Following the success of their first comedy specials on Netflix, Franco Escamilla and Daniel Sosa will also return with new specials this year.
