Future of TV will be based on software and virtualization

Latin America. Our region is no stranger to the uncertainty that the broadcast industry is going through at the global level, so it is necessary to achieve definitions in terms of technology to overcome this stage.

In that sense, Filippo Ferlini, sales director for America of Newtek, assured TVyVideo+Radio that "the problem today is the need to go towards a new model of television. We believe that things as they were done since the birth of television no longer work due to technological development and how the market has been evolving."

He added that "in Latin America there is a lot of uncertainty. There is no clear picture for many of the channels. Our conviction is that the future of television will be based on software, computers, virtualization. We believe that this kind of evolution is not so clear now, it must be so soon because it is the only way to improve and increase content production without increasing costs."

The director of Newtek stressed that the technological definition goes through the issue of IP. With the NDI protocol model, developed by this company, today there are more than a thousand companies that use it and have received more than 8 thousand requests. There are several channel experiences that have already successfully implemented the NDI system. Among them are NBC, TVN in Panama, Globo in Brazil.

He stressed that "all this type of work is important and will push the market to adopt a standard as soon as possible. This transition will be long, what is important is that the heart of the production is IP-based. This is going to give you enormous flexibility and an economy in production. We believe, we are convinced, that Newtek is part of this new way of making television. We are going to live with 3 or 4 standards with specific applications and NDI will be the protagonist."

Finally, Filipo Ferlini concluded that "the industry must understand that we are in a moment of change in which we require more content to feed more signals. It's a major challenge because we're used to relying on a box or a piece of metal. But it will be a process of trust and change. We are convinced that 2019 will be a year of development."
