Colombia is a regional example of a digital economy

Colombia. The fifth version of the Latin American Telecommunications Congress, CLT2017, was successfully completed, in which Colombia shared the advances in policies and regulation in the face of the Digital Economy.

The Congress, which brought together more than 500 participants from 30 countries, including senior representatives of governments in the Latin American region, telecommunications regulators, industry representatives and renowned academics, closed with a positive balance in terms of exchange of experiences to address digital transformation.

During the event, Colombia positioned itself as an example for the other countries of Latin America, since it is already defining the way it will address the challenge of the Digital Economy. The Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) presented the advances in the Strategy in this regard, especially with the implementation of the Vice Ministry for the Digital Economy and the Observatory, through which the level of digitalization of the main economic sub-sectors will be measured, to draw up the appropriate policies to help each of them in the process of digital transformation.

For its part, the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) announced the advances in regulatory matters, such as the design of a roadmap that will guide its action in the next five years to address these challenges.

During the three days of Congress, the National Government held several bilateral meetings with regulators and agents of the ICT industry, in which it announced the advances in regulatory matters in Colombia and the projects that are part of the 2017-2018 agenda. These meetings resulted in the definition of joint work agendas for the development of relevant projects for the sector.

The most important announcement of the event was in charge of the National Government, who shared the new definition of broadband in the country (25 Mbps download and 5Mbps upload from January 2019), which seeks that telecommunications operators offer plans that meet the needs of users, who increasingly access digital content. Likewise, promote the development and use of content and applications, such as telemedicine, teleworking, tele-study and electronic government, among others.
