400m of visits per month receive pirate media in the region

Chile. Today there are more than 400 million monthly visits to pirate media in Chile and Latin America, and more than 400 online sites that offer audiovisual content (movies, series, telenovelas, etc.), in addition to live broadcasts of channels from different parts of the world, with traffic of more than 400 million monthly users.

Complex and constantly changing issue marked by the digital convergence that was addressed at the Forum Anti-Piracy and Audiovisual Content 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and where the President of the CNTV and President of the Platform of Regulators of Ibero-America, PRAI, Oscar Reyes, attended, who spoke about "intellectual property in media laws".

"In most of the countries that make up the Platform of Regulators of Ibero-America, PRAI, there is an organization independent of the audiovisual regulator to address the issue of copyright, intellectual property and piracy. However, in a scenario of technological development where the convergence of means appears as a radical transformation of the modes of production and consumption, regulation is difficult, and we must bet on a joint work in this matter. That is, acting in an integral way, which covers content issues, especially the challenge posed by the Internet, as well as issues related to citizen access and user protection, "said the President of the CNTV.

"The way to address the challenges posed by piracy and content must vary according to each country, the laws that regulate intellectual property and the interference that regulatory bodies have in this matter," reyes said. He then analyzed the current copyright conditions in Argentina, Chile, Spain, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, countries that currently make up the PRAI.

In the case of Chile, Copyright is regulated by Law No. 17,336 on Intellectual Property of October 2, 1970, which refers to a set of legal norms that protect the author and his intellectual work, as well as the so-called copyright holders, that is, surviving spouse, heirs, assignees and legatees.
