CNTV to tender 116 digital TV frequencies

Chile. Described as a historical fact, since for the first time it will be possible to request a new concession of television of national, regional, local or local coverage of a community nature, the National Television Council, CNTV, made a call for public competition to apply for 116 frequencies of Digital Television throughout the country in the city of Valparaíso.

The President of the National Television Council, Oscar Reyes, launched the public tender for the central zone of the country where there are 21 frequencies available between the Valparaíso region and the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins region.

"Today we have 116 frequencies available in the country. We want to invite all those who today make television content or want to make a television with more content and quality, and all local and community channels in this region and the country to apply and access new television concessions, and thus expand the existing content offer in our country. Chile requires more and greater pluralism, and better representativeness and inclusion of all sectors of society," said the president of the CNTV.

The application form is available in www.cntv.cl where applicants through an application specify the type of concession to which they want to apply, whether national, regional, local or local of a community nature. Once the application has been initiated, the National Television Council has 30 working days to call for a contest in the region corresponding to the applications received. In case of consultation, the email is available: [email protected]

In a second stage, the contest requires the presentation and submission of four folders, one with legal background, another with technical background, programmatic content and another with financial background. The Council, composed of 11 members, will designate a score for each of these proposals, with the content being the most relevant.

Currently in Chile there are 849 television concessions that are already in the process of migrating from analog to digital, plus 13 concessions of a municipal nature. The digital ignition or analog blackout was set for April 2020.

Of this number of available frequencies, and as stipulated by law, the Council has determined that 40% should be reserved for regional, local and local channels and community character, of which two national frequencies intended only for cultural or educational signals should be considered.
